Abstract
This paper brings together some reflections and observations about ‘seeing or not seeing’ the infant in the course of our work, with the experience of seeing the infant of an observation contrasted to the everyday struggle of clinical work. I offer the three ‘babies’ of my experience, with brief reference to selected ideas from developmental research. I then try to draw some threads together about the impact of the infant on us as clinicians with particular reference to our ambivalence about seeing the infant. Finally, I highlight how the experience of the holding space of an infant observation enhances the growth of a reflective mind in us, as clinicians.
