Abstract
The goal of this paper is to review current research relevant to neuropsychological aspects of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and guide future research by providing an overview of central nervous system involvement associated with HIV, by reviewing the HIV-related neuropsychological literature and discussing common methodological and statistical problems in this relatively new area of study, and by considering the possibility of HIV dementia being a “subcortical dementia” to illustrate the importance of theory in HIV-related neuropsychological research.
