Ish Haji deserves thanks for a number of very helpful editorial suggestions that clearly improved the final product. In addition, Michael McKenna, Manuel Vargas, and Gideon Yaffe graciously read and commented on an earlier version of this paper. I am especially grateful to John Fischer for encouragement, insight, and advice.
Notes
1. This is the argument developed in Responsibility and control: A theory of moral responsibility (Fischer and Ravizza 1998).
2. This is not to say that they have not advanced the debate at all. The exploration of logical space upon which they have embarked is illuminating in many ways. My point is that, contrary to their own hopes, their approach doesn't offer a ‘middle way’ that can steer clear of the older debate.
3. ‘Transfer NR’ is simply a slightly more focused version of a more general transfer principle which Peter Van Inwagen refers to as ‘principle β.’
4. Unless one allows for the possibility of radical Cartesian dualism.
