Analyzing occupational challenges through the lens of body and biography

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Occupational scientists are tasked with the responsibility of examining the relationship between occupational engagement and health, yet as occupations are explored in situ, these concepts only become more complex. For example, lifestyle trade-offs occur when individuals make conscious decisions between two competing sets of actions: actions taken in promotion of physical health versus actions in agreement with an identity-driven biography. In this study, these dilemmas are viewed as parts of an ongoing occupational challenge to balance physical health with subjective well-being in everyday life.

Methods: Anselm Strauss’s concepts of body state and biographical moment are conceptualized as analytic tools to study dimensions within which occupation is performed. A descriptive, single-case analysis of a young adult diagnosed with diabetes is presented as an exemplar of how Strauss’s tools may be utilized.

Results: Four themes emerged within the presented narrative: (1) by the book versus reality, (2) testing the boundaries of diabetes, (3) diabetes burnout and the struggle for perfection, and (4) the inevitable merge between body and biography.

Conclusion: Sadie’s narrative exemplifies the multiple contexts in which agentic decisions to engage in specific occupations are made. Sadie’s experiences of diabetes burnout and actions taken while “on vacation” are not uncommon within chronic illness literature and warrant further analyses that consider physical and psychological domains of health. By dismantling situational factors using analytic tools, such as Strauss’s body state and biographical moment, occupational scientists may further understand lived experiences and clarify the link between occupation and health.

Introducción: Los científicos ocupacionales tienen la responsabilidad de examinar la relación existente entre participación ocupacional y salud. Empero, a medida que las ocupaciones son inspeccionadas in situ, estos conceptos se vuelven más complejos. Por ejemplo, las concesiones en términos de estilos de vida ocurren cuando los individuos toman decisiones conscientes entre dos conjuntos de acciones opuestos, esto es, acciones realizadas para promover la salud física versus acciones efectuadas en consonancia con una biografía impulsada por la identidad. En el presente estudio, estos dilemas son vistos como partes de un desafío ocupacional permanente que equilibra la salud física con el bienestar subjetivo en la vida cotidiana.

Métodos: Los conceptos de estado corporal y momento biográfico propuestos por Anselm Strauss son conceptualizados como herramientas analíticas destinadas a estudiar las dimensiones en que se realiza la ocupación. Para visualizar cómo pueden utilizarse las herramientas de Strauss, se presenta el análisis descriptivo de un caso único de un joven adulto diagnosticado con diabetes.

Resultados: A partir de la narrativa presentada surgen cuatro temas: (1) lo teórico versus la realidad; (2) probando los límites de la diabetes; (3) desgaste a causa de la diabetes y lucha por la perfección; y (4) la fusión inevitable entre cuerpo y biografía.

Conclusión: La narrativa de Sadie ejemplifica los múltiples contextos en que se toman decisiones agenciales para participar en ciertas ocupaciones específicas. Sus vivencias en relación con el desgaste atribuible a la diabetes y las acciones realizadas durante “las vacaciones” no son raras en la literatura sobre enfermedades crónicas, lo cual amerita análisis posteriores que revisen los dominios de salud físicos y psicológicos. A partir del desmantelamiento de factores situacionales empleando herramientas analíticas como el estado corporal y el momento biográfico de Strauss, los científicos ocupacionales pueden comprender mejor las experiencias vividas y aclarar el vínculo existente entre ocupación y salud.
