Participatory digital methodologies: Potential of three approaches for advancing transformative occupation-based research with children and youth

ABSTRACT

This paper addresses the need for methodological expansions that enable critical examination of the situated nature of occupation and enact transformative research agendas. Participatory digital methodologies offer a potential way forward given their critical underpinnings and have been proposed as particularly appropriate to facilitate engagement of children and youth. This paper provides a critical methodological review of interdisciplinary research with children and youth that has utilized one of three participatory digital methodologies (i.e., digital storytelling, participatory videos and participatory geographic information systems) for transformative research addressing social and health inequities in ways that also attend to occupation. Working with a sample of 20 research articles, analysis focused on critically considering how the examples demonstrated participation of children and youth, enacted transformation, and addressed occupation. All three methodologies demonstrated strengths as participatory methodologies in involving children and youth within research and action processes, although with challenges and tensions related to power sharing. Transformation at the personal level was often claimed, with fewer examples addressing social transformation. Knowledge relevant to the situated nature of occupation, occupational spaces, and occupational injustice emerged. This review demonstrates that participatory digital methodologies offer a promising direction forward in enacting a transformative occupation-based research agenda that involves working with children, youth, and other community members.

Este documento aborda la necesidad de impulsar ampliaciones metodológicas que permitan realizar un examen crítico del carácter situado de la ocupación y propongan agendas de investigación transformadoras. Debido a sus fundamentos críticos, las metodologías digitales participativas muestran un camino posible para avanzar, señalándose que son especialmente apropiadas para facilitar la participación de niños y jóvenes. El presente artículo da cuenta de una revisión metodológica crítica de la investigación interdisciplinaria con niños y jóvenes que aplicó una de las tres metodologías digitales participativas (es decir, narración digital, videos participativos y sistemas de información geográfica participativos) a la investigación transformadora que aborda las desigualdades sociales y de salud en formas que también inciden en la ocupación. A partir de una muestra de 20 artículos de investigación, el análisis se centró en considerar críticamente cómo los estudios mostraron la participación de niños y jóvenes, promulgaron la transformación y abordaron la ocupación. Las tres metodologías demostraron fortalezas como metodologías participativas orientadas a involucrar a niños y jóvenes en procesos de investigación y acción, aunque exhibieron desafíos y tensiones relacionados con la distribución del poder. A menudo, los artículos afirmaban haber documentado una transformación a nivel personal, existiendo menos ejemplos en los que se constatara una transformación social. En este sentido surgió el conocimiento pertinente para el carácter situado de la ocupación, los espacios ocupacionales y la injusticia ocupacional. La presente revisión da cuenta de que las metodologías digitales participativas ofrecen un camino prometedor para implementar una agenda de investigación transformadora basada en la ocupación que involucra el trabajo con niños, jóvenes y otros miembros de la comunidad.
