ABSTRACT

The concepts of environment, time, and occupation are of paramount concern in occupational science. Three real-life stories are employed in this lecture to help envision these concepts and their interconnections and linkages to other vital concerns in occupational science. The stories concern a young chimpanzee who lives with her own and another family in a zoo, an old man who tries to make the best of each day in a locked dementia unit, and a program that integrates horses within proffered occupational opportunities to help enrich the moments and days of older adults with dementia. Each story is derived from extensive research of what live creatures do in the here and now of given spaces and times. This research illuminates how their doings variously transform as time moves on and ecological features—of which the live creatures are invariably part—remain static or fluidly shift. Envisioning the environment, time, and occupation as reflected in these stories reveals areas of congruence with previously articulated transactional perspectives of occupation, raises questions meriting further scholarly attention, and generates new perspectives of potential value to occupational science.
