Identification of occupations in a South African rural less-resourced community

ABSTRACT

South Africa has vast rural areas where the installation of water supply and electrification infrastructure has been expedited since the first democratic elections in 1994. Yet, significant challenges remain. This paper focuses on the impact of resource scarcity and the resultant occupations of water and fuelwood collection in a rural South African context. The study was conducted in the Limpopo Province of South Africa and investigated the Basic Activities of Daily Living (bADL) and Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (iADL) tasks typically performed in a rural community. A Rapid Rural Assessment methodology was employed. Data were collected using discussion groups and participatory mapping with community care workers. Quantitative analysis of data used directed content analysis utilising the International Classification of Functioning (ICF) and the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework III (OTPF III) as coding frameworks. Results showed that most of the bADL and iADL tasks identified in the rural context are reflected in the ICF and the OTPF III but collection of water and fuelwood are not. In addition, the forms of rural bADL and iADL tasks described in the ICF and the OTPF III differ significantly from those carried out in typical urban well-resourced contexts that have household amenities such as piped water and electricity. The daily collection of water and fuelwood limits the occupational choices of many rural women and results in occupational imbalance and occupational deprivation.

Sudáfrica tiene vastas áreas rurales en las que, desde las primeras elecciones democráticas en 1994, se aceleró la instalación de infraestructura de suministro de agua y la electrificación. Sin embargo, aún quedan desafíos importantes. El presente artículo se centra en el impacto que conlleva la escasez de recursos y las ocupaciones resultantes de la recolección de agua y leña en un contexto rural de este país. Para explorar estos aspectos, se realizó un estudio en la provincia de Limpopo, Sudáfrica; en el mismo se investigaron las tareas implicadas en las actividades básicas de la vida cotidiana (bADL), además de las actividades instrumentales de la vida cotidiana (iADL) realizadas comúnmente en una comunidad rural, empleándose para ello una metodología de evaluación rural rápida. Los datos se recopilaron mediante grupos de discusión y el mapeo participativo con trabajadores de atención comunitaria. El abordaje cuantitativo de los datos obtenidos orientó el análisis de contenidos utilizando la Clasificación Internacional de Funcionamiento (icf) y el Marco de Práctica de Terapia Ocupacional III (otpf III) como encuadre de codificación. Los resultados mostraron que el icf y el otpf III reflejan la mayoría de tareas bADL e iADL identificadas en el contexto rural, pero no las de recolección de agua y leña. Además, la forma en que se realizan las tareas en el ámbito rural de bADL y iADL descritas en el icf y el otpf III difieren significativamente de las que se llevan a cabo en contextos urbanos bien dotados de recursos, pues cuentan con servicios domésticos como el agua corriente y la electricidad. La recolección diaria de agua y leña limita las opciones ocupacionales de muchas mujeres del ámbito rural, dando como resultado un desequilibrio ocupacional e incluso la privación ocupacional.
