“Music is life”: Identity, challenge, and passion in the occupational patterns of male young adult rock musicians

ABSTRACT

This qualitative study examined the occupational experiences of young adult rock musicians using first-hand accounts solicited through semi-structured interviews. Participants included nine male rock musicians aged 19 to 35 who actively participated in an income-generating rock band. A grounded theory approach was used for data analysis and interpretation. Participation in a rock band was conceptualized as a dynamic process between identifying as a musician, facing challenges, and meeting challenges, which either led musicians to persevere or to discontinue engagement in the band. Results challenge stereotypes associated with rock band participation and contribute to understanding the connection between occupational engagement and motivation. Band participation as a co-occupation and relationships between technology and occupational engagement are also discussed.

Este estudio cualitativo examinó las experiencias ocupacionales de jóvenes adultos músicos de rock, para lo cual utilizó relatos de primera mano obtenidos de entrevistas semiestructuradas. La investigación abordó a nueve músicos de rock varones, cuyas edades fluctúan entre los 19 y 35 años, quienes participaban activamente en una banda de rock que generaba ingresos. Para el análisis y la interpretación de los datos se utilizó un enfoque de teoría fundamentada. La participación en una banda de rock fue conceptualizada como un proceso dinámico entre la identificación como músico, el enfrentamiento a los desafíos y su superación, lo que llevó a los músicos a perseverar o a dejar de participar en la banda. Los resultados ponen en tela de juicio los estereotipos asociados con la participación en este tipo de banda y contribuyen a comprender la conexión entre compromiso ocupacional y motivación. Además, el estudio examina la participación en la banda como ocupación conjunta y las relaciones entre la tecnología y el compromiso ocupacional.

RÉSUMÉ

Cette étude qualitative examine les expériences occupationnelles des jeunes adultes musiciens de rock au moyen de témoignages recueillis directement via des entretiens semi-structurés. Les participants, neuf hommes musiciens de rock, âgés de 19 à 35 ans, participaient à groupe de rock générant des revenus. Une approche par théorisation ancrée a été retenue pour l'analyse et l'interprétation des données. La participation à un groupe rock a été conceptualisée comme un processus dynamique oscillant entre s'identifier à titre de musicien, affronter les défis et surmonter les défis, processus qui a encouragé les musiciens à persévérer ou à mettre fin à leur engagement dans le groupe. Les résultats remettent en question les stéréotypes associés à la participation à un groupe rock et contribue à mieux comprendre le lien entre l'engagement occupationnel et la motivation. La participation à un groupe de musique à titre de co-occupation ainsi que les relations entre la technologie et l'engagement occupationnel sont également abordées.
