Occupational ideation and participation among middle school students in a college-going culture program

ABSTRACT

Adolescents in under-resourced communities are at risk of low educational outcomes which contribute to lower overall earning power and fewer resources to access the social determinants of health over time. This may impact their long-term health outcomes as well as current and future participation in meaningful occupations, including their academic and career futures. Adolescents in communities with low educational attainment face tensions between constraint and agency as they consider and take steps toward their adult career identities. This qualitative study examined occupation among adolescents in the context of a college-going culture program in an underserved community in the southwestern United States. Through participant observation and interviews with 13 participants in grades 6-8, data were collected and analyzed using qualitative coding and thematic analysis. Four themes emerged: career goal and interest alignment, practical and idealistic approach, many big steps are required, and money is a problem. Results demonstrated that students in the program had complex views of the future and growing occupation-based identities that included their current context and vocational futures. They demonstrated awareness of the financial and educational barriers to achieving their goals and articulated plans that involved intentional occupational choices in the present in order to create opportunities for themselves in the future. Evidence from this study supports the use of occupation-focused interventions in community or population health that focus on access to participation in meaningful occupations that are required of adolescents in their specific contexts or that may serve to open future occupational opportunities.

Los adolescentes que habitan en comunidades con pocos recursos corren el riesgo de sólo lograr resultados educativos inferiores. A la larga, ello contribuye a su menor capacidad general para obtener ingresos y a que tengan menos recursos para acceder a los determinantes sociales de la salud. Asimismo, a largo plazo esto puede repercutir en su salud y en su participación actual y futura en ocupaciones significativas, entre las que se incluye su futuro académico y profesional. Los adolescentes de comunidades con bajos niveles educativos se enfrentan a tensiones entre restricciones y agencia, a medida que consideran y toman medidas en aras de alcanzar sus identidades profesionales en la adultez. El presente estudio cualitativo examinó la ocupación de los adolescentes en el contexto de un programa cultural encaminado a alentar carreras universitarias en una comunidad desatendida del sudoeste de Estados Unidos. La información se recabó a través de la observación de los participantes y de entrevistas con 13 estudiantes inscritos en 6° a 8° grados; posteriormente, esta fue examinada mediante codificación cualitativa y análisis temático, lo que dio lugar al surgimiento de cuatro ejes temáticos: alineación de objetivos e intereses de carrera; enfoque práctico e idealista; se requiere dar muchos grandes pasos; y el dinero constituye un problema. En este sentido, los resultados permitieron constatar que los estudiantes del programa tenían visiones complejas sobre el futuro y, de manera creciente, expresaron identidades basadas en la ocupación que incluían su contexto actual y sus futuros vocacionales. Al respecto, demostraron ser conscientes de las barreras financieras y educativas existentes para alcanzar sus objetivos, por lo que refirieron planes que implican opciones ocupacionales intencionadas en el presente con el fin de crear oportunidades para sí mismos en el futuro. Los resultados de este estudio avalan el uso de intervenciones de salud poblacional o comunitaria enfocadas en la ocupación, centradas en el acceso a la participación en ocupaciones significativas que se requieren de los adolescentes en sus contextos específicos o que pueden servir para abrir oportunidades ocupacionales futuras para ellos.
