The development and future of occupational science: A budding occupational scientist’s reflections and assertions about the discipline

ABSTRACT

As occupational science moves beyond 30 years as an academic discipline, reviewing its genesis and development is important in envisioning its future as a continually relevant, socially responsive discipline that addresses globally concerning issues. My positionality in writing this article is as a budding occupational scientist who has experience as an occupational therapy practitioner and educator, offering a multi-varied lens through which I am beginning to see and process concepts about the discipline. Thus, I reflect on aspects of the historical development of occupational science, offering my perspectives on the context that supported its genesis and identifying four foundational tenets that I perceive to have underpinned the science’s initial historical contributions. Then, pre-existing published literature forms the basis for an overview of where and how occupational science has developed globally and supports my thoughts about the relationship of occupational science to occupational therapy and its potential impact on continued disciplinary growth and maturation. A compilation of already established concepts guides my commentary on how research and theory development should study and measure occupation in a transformative and socially responsible way, how language factors have influenced expansion and incorporation of occupational science globally, the role of interdisciplinarity in shaping knowledge generation, and the influence of teaching and learning on the education of future generations of scientists. Finally, a synthesis of views from the literature shapes my recommendations for future disciplinary growth and societal contribution.

作为一门学术性学科, 生活活动科学已经有30多年的历史了。为了将其发展为一门持续相关的、具有社会反应力的、并在全球范围内解决相关问题的学科，回顾其起源和发展至关重要。我在撰写本文时的身份是一名新兴的生活活动科学家，具有作为活动治疗从业者和教育者的经验，提供了一个多角度的视角，通过它我可以开始查看和处理有关该学科的概念。因此，我反思了生活活动科学历史发展的各个方面，就支持其起源的背景提出了自己的看法，并确定了我认为是该科学最初的历史性贡献的四个基本原则。接着，现有已出版的文献构成了概述生活活动科学在全球范围内在何处和如何发展的基础，并支持了我关于生活活动科学与活动治疗之间的关系及其对持续学科发展和成熟的潜在影响的思想。一系列已经确立的概念指导了我的评论，内容涉及研究和理论发展应如何以一种具有变革性和对社会负责的方式研究和衡量生活活动，语言因素如何影响全球生活活动科学的扩展和纳入，跨学科在塑造知识生成中的作用，以及教与学对子孙后代教育的影响。最后，总结自文献中的观点形成了我对未来学科发展和社会贡献所提出的建议。

En tanto la ciencia ocupacional ha superado los 30 años como disciplina académica, resulta importante revisar su génesis y su desarrollo, a fin de visualizar su futuro como disciplina perenemente relevante y con capacidad de respuesta social, que permite abordar cuestiones neurálgicas a nivel mundial. Al escribir este artículo, ocupo la posición de un científico ocupacional en ciernes, con experiencia como practicante y educador de terapia ocupacional, que ofrece una lente multivariable a través de la cual empiezo a ver y procesar conceptos sobre la disciplina. Así, reflexiono sobre aspectos de su desarrollo histórico, brindando mis perspectivas sobre el contexto que apoyó su génesis e identificando cuatro principios fundamentales que desde mi punto de vista sustentaron las contribuciones históricas iniciales de la ciencia. En este sentido, la literatura publicada constituye la base para una visión general acerca de dónde y cómo se desarrolló la ciencia ocupacional a nivel mundial, al tiempo que respalda mis reflexiones sobre en torno a la relación entre la ciencia ocupacional y la terapia ocupacional y su posible impacto en el crecimiento y la maduración continua de la disciplina. Una compilación de conceptos ya establecidos, guía mi comentario en torno a cómo la investigación y el desarrollo de la teoría deberían estudiar y medir la ocupación de una manera transformadora y socialmente responsable, cómo los factores del lenguaje influyeron en la expansión y la incorporación de la ciencia ocupacional a nivel mundial, el papel desempeñado por la interdisciplinariedad en la conformación de la generación del conocimiento y la influencia de la enseñanza y el aprendizaje en la educación de las futuras generaciones de científicos. Por último, una síntesis de los puntos de vista enunciados en la literatura enmarca mis recomendaciones para el futuro crecimiento de la disciplina y su contribución social.

RÉSUMÉ

Alors que les sciences de l'occupation dépassent les 30 ans d'existence en tant que discipline académique, il est important d'examiner sa genèse et son développement pour envisager son avenir comme une discipline toujours pertinente et socialement réactive, qui aborde des enjeux d'intérêt mondial. Pour écrire cet article, je me positionne en tant que chercheuse en herbe en sciences de l'occupation, qui a de l'expérience comme praticienne et enseignante en ergothérapie, m'offrant ainsi des lunettes multiples et variées à travers lesquelles je commence à voir et à travailler les concepts de la discipline. En conséquence, je réfléchis aux aspects du développement historique des sciences de l'occupation, en proposant mon point de vue sur le contexte qui a soutenu sa genèse et en identifiant quatre principes fondamentaux que j'ai perçu comme soutenant les contributions historiques initiales de cette discipline. Ainsi, la littérature publiée préexistante forme la base d'une vue d'ensemble de la manière dont les sciences de l'occupation se sont développées au niveau mondial et soutient mes réflexions sur la relation entre les sciences de l'occupation et l'ergothérapie, ainsi que sur leur impact potentiel sur la croissance et la maturation continues de la discipline. Une compilation des concepts déjà bien établis guide mon commentaire sur la façon dont la recherche et les développements théoriques devraient étudier et mesurer l'occupation d'une manière transformatrice et socialement responsable, la manière dont les facteurs linguistiques ont influencé l'expansion et l'incorporation des sciences de l'occupation au niveau mondial, le rôle de l'interdisciplinarité dans l’élaboration de la production de savoirs et l'influence de l'enseignement et de l'apprentissage sur l’éducation des générations futures de chercheurs et chercheuses. Enfin, une synthèse des points de vue issus de la littérature me permet de formuler mes recommandations pour la croissance future de la discipline et de sa contribution à la société.
