Conceptualizing the role of occupation in the production of space

ABSTRACT

The interaction of occupation and space has long been studied in occupational science. Increasingly, occupational scientists take a transactional approach to examine the spatial nature of occupation. Drawing from Lefebvre’s (1991) theory of ‘the production of space’, this paper emphasizes that occupations are inherently spatial, but also that space is produced through occupation. We contend that Lefebvre’s “spatial triad” – conceived, perceived, and lived space as the three components of space production – and his dynamic conceptualization of space challenges a space/place dichotomy. An occupational reading of the spatial triad serves to demonstrate the prominent role of occupation in the production of space and draws attention to its intentionality. Our analysis shows that occupational scientists can contribute to a comprehensive, dynamic, and critical conceptualization of space. Such approaches are useful to critique theories that support and maintain regulatory power dynamics over space and bring novel insights on the spatiality of occupation. While occupation is the visible element of the production of space, Lefebvre’s theory invites us to look beyond, to other elements that are in constant interaction with occupation.

长期以来，生活活动科学研究活动与空间的相互作用。生活活动科学家越来越多地采用事务性方法来研究活动的空间性质。本文从列斐伏尔（Lefebvre，1991）的“空间生产”理论出发，强调生活活动本身就是空间性的，但空间也是通过生活活动而产出的。我们认为，列斐伏尔的“空间三合会”（即设想的空间、感知的空间和居住的空间是空间产出的三个组成部分）以及他对空间的动态概念化挑战了空间/地点二分法。对空间三合会的生活活动解读旨在证明生活活动在空间产出中的重要作用，并引起人们对其意图的关注。我们的分析表明，生活活动科学家可以为空间的全面的、动态的和批判性的概念化做出贡献。这样的方式有用于这样的批判性理论，它支持和维持空间监管力动态并带来关于生活活动空间性的新颖见解。生活活动是空间产出的可见要素，而列斐伏尔的理论则让我们看得更远些，思考与生活活动不断互动的其它因素。

Durante mucho tiempo, la ciencia ocupacional ha estudiado la interacción entre la ocupación y el espacio. Cada vez más, los científicos ocupacionales adoptan un enfoque transaccional para examinar la naturaleza espacial de la ocupación. A partir de la teoría de Lefebvre (1991) sobre “la producción de espacio”, este trabajo hace hincapié en el hecho de que las ocupaciones son intrínsecamente espaciales, pero también en que el espacio se produce a través de la ocupación. Sostenemos que la “tríada espacial” de Lefebvre —concebida, percibida y vivida como los tres componentes de la producción del espacio— y su conceptualización dinámica del espacio cuestionan la idea de que existe una dicotomía espacio/lugar. Una lectura ocupacional de la tríada espacial sirve para dar cuenta del papel prominente que desempeña la ocupación en la producción del espacio y pone de manifiesto su intencionalidad. Nuestro análisis muestra que los científicos ocupacionales pueden contribuir a una conceptualización integral, dinámica y crítica del espacio. Esos enfoques son útiles para revisar críticamente las teorías que apoyan y reproducen la dinámica del poder regulador sobre el espacio, a la vez que aportan nuevos conocimientos sobre la espacialidad de la ocupación. Si bien la ocupación es el elemento visible en la producción del espacio, la teoría de Lefebvre nos invita a mirar más allá y a considerar otros elementos que están en constante interacción con la ocupación.
