1. This editorial is a version of a paper delivered at the 14th International Conference on Gambling and Risk Taking, Lake Tahoe, 2009.
2. The First National Conference on Gambling and Risk Taking, sponsored by the University of Nevada, Reno, was held in conjunction with the Western Economic Association annual meetings at the Sahara Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas in June, 1974.
3. The book on which the movie was based (Pileggi, Citation1985) is a much more accurate depiction of the events of that time.
