Abstract
The nanoparticles are emerging as the new technology in the area of machining and also a substitute for conventional machining fluids. The article illustrates the effect of minimum quantity lubrication technique using copper nanofluids in drilling on AA 5052 alloy. The experiments were performed under dry machining, oil machining and nanofluids under MQL by varying the cutting speed. Surface roughness (Ra), tool wear, cutting temperature and chip morphology are the responses considered for the study. It was observed that use of copper nanofluid under MQL paved a way in reducing the surface roughness by 92 and 76%, tool wear reduced by 36 and 24% and cutting temperature decreased by and 27% compared to dry and oil lubrication. In addition, the three-dimensional view of surfaces machined was analysed by atomic force microscope (AFM) and tool wear, chip morphology were examined under scanning electron microscope (SEM) to analyse the texture generated.
