Optimal location and geometry of sensors and actuators for active vibration control of smart composite beams

ABSTRACT

This work investigates the problem of optimal placement and geometry of piezoelectric sensors and actuators (S/A) to improve active vibration control performance of smart laminated beam. Theoretical formulation is based on efficient layer-wise finite element model along with an optimal control theory. Control theory is implemented in state space format considering a reduced order model. A laminated beam with collocated piezoelectric S/A placed at the top and bottom surfaces has been considered. A series of simulation based on Taguchi design of experiment has been carried out to determine the optimal placement and geometry of the S/A to achieve best control performance that is maximum modal active damping ratio ξ/minimum settling time with minimum actuator voltage. A multi-criteria optimisation has been performed using Proximity Indexed Value (PIV) integrated with entropy methods. Further, the analysis of mean (ANOM) and analysis of variance (ANOVA) are performed to identify the most significant input parameter based on their percentage contribution. For the smart cantilever beam considered in the analysis, the location of the S/A is the most significant having maximum percentage contribution (35.69%) followed by its length (33.04%) and thickness (24.55%).

M. Yaqoob Yasin is Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, AMU Aligarh. He has obtained Ph.D. degree in dynamics and control from Indian Institute of Technology Delhi. His research interests include dynamics and control, nonlinear thermo-electro-elasticity, smart structures, computational mechanics and finite element methods.

A. H. Khan

A. H. Khan has over 15 years of teaching and research experience. He is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, AMU Aligarh. He has obtained Ph.D. degree in the area of nonlinear dynamics from Indian Institute of Technology Delhi. His research interests include non-linear dynamics, computational mechanics and finite element methods.

Mohammad Asjad

Mohammad Asjad is Associate Professor in the Discipline of Mechanical Engineering, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi. He graduated in Mechanical Engineering from Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh and later did his Masters in Industrial and Production Engineering from Z.H.C.E.T (AMU, Aligarh) and securing the first position in both of them. Subsequently, he completed his Ph.D. in the area of Maintenance Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology Delhi. His research interests are: Strategic Asset Management, Reliability Engineering, Maintenance Management, Manufacturing Operations Planning, Life Cycle Costing, Applied Optimization, Soft computing and Applied Artificial Intelligence. He has published several research articles at various national and international journals and conferences of repute.

Zahid A. Khan

Zahid A. Khan is a Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Jamia Millia Islamia (A Central University), New Delhi, India. He received his PhD in 2001 from Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi, India. His major research interest includes optimisation of design and manufacturing processes parameters, ANN and fuzzy modelling, environmental ergonomics, etc. He has supervised seven doctoral theses and many M. Tech. dissertations so far and currently he is supervising several doctoral theses. He has published more than 150 articles in reputed journals so far. He has also co-authored four books related to engineering and two monographs as well.
