6. ‘One way to think about this differentiation, or this movement between matter/mattering, is to use Latour’s useful little point about the shift in our time from “Matters of Fact” to “Matters of Concern”. Philosophically, for us, until very recently indeed, matter, as above all natural matter, earth-stuff, has meant Fact. In effect, matter was/is equated to “object” and was/is contrasted to “subject”. But Mattering, meaning that which matters (to us) is precisely a matter of concern and thus cannot have the quality of a fact. A matter(ing) is not therefore an object’ (Dilnot Citation2015, 119).

Vasco Branco
Vasco Branco’s research interests are related to design ontology, interaction/experience design, and the Portuguese design history and ecosystem.
Francisco Providência
Francisco Providência was involved in the establishment of the Research Institute for Design, Media and Culture (ID+). He has represented Portugal on the advisory committee of Design Bienal Ibero Americana (BID) since 2007 and belongs to the board of Porto International Design Biennale 2017. In 2008, he received the Red Dot International Award and, in 1999, was distinguished by Design National Awards (Portuguese Centre of Design).
