Abstract
In this case study of the tourism image of Dullstroom, various contributions to the formation of the destination image were investigated. The location of the destination as represented on tourism maps; icons on road signs; slogans and strap lines from marketing collateral and frequencies of key words in websites were analysed. Structured interviews were conducted with representatives of business in Dullstroom and visitors to establish why people visit Dullstroom. The tourism image of Dullstroom is based on trout fishing, the attraction offered by the natural environment and events. Various types of tourist making up niche markets were distinguished and comments posted on websites were examined. The type of information disseminated, as well as the way in which information about a place is communicated, play a vital role in the tourism image as well as tourists’ perceptions of a destination.
Résumé: S'ennuie-t-on à Dullstroom? Une exploration de l'image touristique de Dullstroom
Dans cette étude de cas de l'image pour le tourisme de Dullstroom, on a étudié diverses contributions à la formation de l'image de cette destination: la localisation de la destination telle qu'elle est représentée sur les cartes touristiques; les symboles sur les panneaux routiers; les slogans et autres formes d'annonces publicitaires; et la fréquence des mots-clé sur les sites web. On a aussi mené des interviews structurées avec les représentants en affaires de Dullstroom et avec des visiteurs pour découvrir pourquoi ils se rendent à Dullstroom. L'image touristique de Dullstroom est construite sur la pêche à la truite, l'attrait de l'environnement naturel et sur des événements. Les touristes, eux, peuvent être regroupés d'après des marchés spécifiques, selon les commentaires postés sur les sites web. Le genre de renseignements diffusés au sujet d'une destination ainsi que la façon dont ils sont communiqués ont un rôle vital dans la composition de son image touristique ainsi que dans la façon dont les touristes la perçoivent.
Zusammenfassung: Wie langweilig ist Dullstroom? Eine Untersuchung von Dullstrooms Image als Tourismusdestination
In dieser Fallstudie des Tourismusimages von Dullstroom wurden verschiedene Beiträge zum Image der Destination untersucht. Die Lage des Zielgebietes, wie sie auf Tourismuskarten dargestellt wird, Bilder auf Straßenschildern, Werbesprüche und Slogans in Marketingmedien sowie die Stichwörterhäufigkeit auf Webseiten wurden analysiert. Strukturierte Interviews wurden mit Dullstrooms Geschäftsleuten und Besuchern durchgeführt, um herauszufinden warum Leute Dullstroom besuchen. Die Grundlagen von Dullstrooms touristischem Image sind das Forellenangeln sowie Veranstaltungen, wobei erstere Attraktion auf den natürlichen Gegebenheiten basiert. Verschiedene Arten von touristischen Nichenmärkten konnten unterschieden werden und Kommentare auf Webseiten wurden untersucht. Die Art der verbreiteten Information sowie die Art und Weise wie Information über einen Ort kommuniziert wird, spielt sowohl für das Tourismusimage als auch für die Wahrnehmungen von Touristen einer Destination eine wichtige Rolle.
