Abstract

Traveling in nature inevitably requires the use of technologies and facilities. These technologies enable tourists to get access to nature and experience nature in a variety of ways, but they also affect how tourists are engaged with nature. The infrastructure and technologies can fundamentally change the relationship between tourists and nature, leading to the alienation of nature. We adopt Tianmen Mountain Nature Park as an example to discuss the problem of alienation in nature tourism. Research has shown that alienation is manifested in nature tourism products, which are designed, managed, and commercialized. What tourists experience is not “nature”, but technology and facilities. We also discuss the potential problem of alienation: tourists no longer stay with nature but become estranged and separated from nature in a new form.
