Notes
1. In Malaysia and Singapore, we pluralize Peranakan terms such as Peranakans, Babas, Nonyas, kebayas etc. in our colloquial and even written English; Suryadinata throughout the book uses Peranakans and Peranakanized, so I will do likewise in this review.
2. Nothing comes up for Peranakan Baba Nyonya Perth Association under Google search; but Pertiwi Western Australia is on Facebook.
3. The website for The Federation of Peranakan Associations is: https://www.peranakan.org.sg/the-federation/ (as of June 24, 2024).
4. Margaret Budiman (1968–2021) left for the United States at high school and continued to pursue tertiary education there; after which she returned to Jakarta, Indonesia. We were planning a reunion after our recent reconnection, which was disrupted by the pandemic. But we never got to meet again – she died of a heart attack during the Covid lockdown.
5. There are Peranakans in Burma as well, which are also under-researched.
