Abstract
This paper uses the format of a case study to describe in some depth a Hindu funeral in India. It discusses the rites, rituals and the religious beliefs and values associated with dying, death, mourning and bereavement. In strict empirical terms, a paper based on a single case study creates problems related to making general statements. However, its merit lies first in the case study itself, which contains valuable information for those unacquainted with Hindu funerals. Second, it articulates a set of principles related to death, the handling of death and the religious and cultural factors associated with death and bereavement among Hindus living not only in India but all over the world.
