Welcome to another world tour of health promotion and education that is an issue of the IJHPE. We visit Ghana with Amoah et al., where we learn about health literacy and health behaviours in street-involved youth (SIY). We are introduced to the subtleties of the experience of the diverse population of SIY, and find out why we need to think more about how to get health messages across to this group of marginalised young people. We explore, with Titterton et al., Russian prisons in order to understand health in that context, and with Beauchemin et al. we uncover the health and fitness industry in the USA, in particular, in relation to the different dimensions of the promotion of health and wellbeing. Our final paper Saleem et al. is concerned with public awareness of smog pollution in Pakistan, its deleterious effects, and what can be done to prevent them. As always, our strength lies in the diversity of our topic areas and the nationalities of the authors who contribute to this journal.

I am pleased to also announce the winners of our annual Pittu Laungani (1936–2007) award for best paper in the journal. Each year the editors select their top two to be honoured. This year, they are:

Winner: ‘Let’s move:’ a systematic review of spouse-involved interventions to promote physical activity – Elizabeth A. Richards, Melissa M. Franks, Meghan H. McDonough & Kimberly Porter.

Runner Up: ‘Milk in a glass, milk in a carton:’ The influence of packaging on children’s perceptions of the healthfulness of milk – Charlene Elliott.

Well done to all of the authors involved!

This will be my last editorial, because I am stepping down after several years, in order to concentrate on other aspects of my work, including writing the books I have not been able to make much progress on over the last few years. It has been fascinating working with so many of you over that time, and I feel that I have learned a lot from you. I would also extend my sincere thanks to my co-editor, Dr Ruth Cross, who has contributed so much and who has been extremely patient with my foibles and frustrations. She herself will be stepping down too, later in the year. I wish the new editor(s) every success.
