Ceramics, clothing and other bodies: affective geographies of homoerotic cruising encounters

Abstract

This paper provides a new approach to the geographies of cruising and public homosex. For some time, social scientists have contended that, in those semi-public spaces where men meet each other for sex, actions speak louder than words and men's competency in using the space is more important that the (sexual) identities they claim in other aspects of their lives. This paper extends that argument in a new direction through an engagement with recent theorizations of affective geographies and more-than-representational approaches to spatial practices. Through a series of short vignettes of cruising encounters on city streets, in public toilets and in urban green spaces, this paper examines how public homosex is enacted and performed in relation to both human and non-human bodies, objects and the environment in which it takes place. The encounters described in the paper draw attention to the complex choreography of gestures through which cruising is performed and sexual engagement is negotiated ethically. I contend that the site-specific, performative nature of these sexual encounters suggests a more contingent sexuality arising from the interaction of bodies in specific environments and exceeding the boundaries of reified sexual identities.

Cet article présente une nouvelle approche des géographies de la drague et des rapports homosexuels en public. Depuis quelques temps, les spécialistes des sciences sociales ont affirmé que dans les espaces semi-publics servant aux rencontres sexuelles entre hommes, les faits parlent d'eux-mêmes et que l'habileté des hommes à tirer parti de cet espace est plus importante que les identités (sexuelles) revendiquées dans les autres sphères de leurs vies. L'article pousse l'argument plus loin en prenant appui sur les théorisations récentes des géographies affectives et les approches plus-que-représentationnelles en matière de pratiques spatiales. Sous forme de brèves capsules portant sur les rencontres de drague établies dans la rue, les toilettes publiques, et les espaces verts urbains, cet article étudie la manière dont les actes homosexuels en public sont mis en scène et accomplis en fonction des corps humains et non-humains, des objets et du milieu dans lequel ils se déroulent. La description des rencontres exposées dans cet article est axée sur la chorégraphie complexe des gestes qui définit la performance de drague et qui sert de cadre de discussions sur l'éthique des actes sexuels. Il est affirmé que le caractère très localisé et performatif de ces rencontres sexuelles indique une sexualité plus aléatoire qui découle de l'interaction des corps dans des milieux particuliers et qui dépasse les frontières des identités sexuelles réifiées.

Este papel ofrece un nuevo enfoque hacia las geografías del ligoteo y el homosexo público. Durante bastante tiempo los cientistas sociales han sostenido que, en aquellos espacios semipúblicos donde los hombres se encuentran para el sexo, las acciones dicen mucho más que las palabras y que la capacidad de los hombres de utilizar el espacio es más importante que las identidades (sexuales) que tienen en otros aspectos de su vida. Este papel extiende el argumento en un nuevo sentido con la incorporación de recientes teorizaciones sobre las geografías afectivas y enfoques más-que-representacionales hacia las prácticas espaciales. Mediante una serie de estampas sobre el ligoteo en las calles de la ciudad, en servicios públicos y en espacios urbanos verdes, este papel examina la manera en que el homosexo público es representado con relación tanto a cuerpos humanos como no humanos, objetos, y al entorno donde tiene lugar. Los encuentros descritos en el papel nos informan de la compleja coreografía de gestos mediante los cuales se representa el ligoteo y se negocia de forma ética el encuentro sexual. Sostengo que el hecho de que estos encuentros sexuales sean de sitio específico y de naturaleza performativa sugiere una sexualidad más contingente que surge de la interacción de cuerpos en entornos específicos que va más allá de las fronteras de identidades sexuales reificadas.

1 Binnie's polemic is somewhat overstated and there is an existing body of work in Geography, and beyond, that has applied post-structuralist thinking to sexual encounters (e.g. Grosz 2005; Lim 2007; Nash and Bain 2007).
