Abstract
In Africa, young people are engaging with a globalised world of flows and movements but are coming of age in environments characterised by uncertainty, economic hardship and unemployment. Drawing upon research conducted in Madina, a suburb of Accra, a social navigation perspective is adopted to explore young people's everyday mobility and their aspirations for future mobility. By drawing attention to the meanings young people ascribe to movement, and by analysing their movements as tactics of social navigation, the importance of spatial mobility to young people's everyday well-being and their processes of social becoming are illustrated. Young people find that their mobility is bounded by a range of factors including labour market characteristics, gender and generational relations, and their spatial location on the outskirts of the city and the margins of the world. However, neither their daily mobility nor their spatial imagination is restricted to Madina; real or imagined travel takes them to other parts of the city, into rural areas and across the nation's borders. Through illustrating how significant mobility can be for everyday survival, this paper contributes to ‘the mobility turn’ in the social sciences which has overlooked the importance of mobility for livelihoods in the global South.
En Afrique, les jeunes sont en train d'engager avec un monde des vagues et des mouvements mondialisés mais ils deviennent plus matures dans des environnements qui se caractérisent par l'incertitude, la difficulté économique, et le chômage. En utilisant des recherches menées en Madina, une banlieue d'Accra, une perspective sociale de navigation est adoptée pour explorer la mobilité quotidienne des jeunes et leurs aspirations à une mobilité d'avenir. En attirant l'attention sur les significations que les jeunes attribuent au mouvement, et en analysant leurs mouvements comme autant de tactiques de navigations sociales, l'importance de mobilité spatiale au bien-être quotidien des jeunes et leurs procédés pour se sociabiliser sont illustrés. Les jeunes trouvent que leur mobilité est attachée à une variété des facteurs incluant les caractéristiques du marché du travail, le genre, et les relations générationnelles, et leur localisation spatiale sur l'orée de la ville et en marge du monde. Toutefois ni leur mobilité quotidienne ni leur imagination spatiale ne sont limitées à Madina; un voyage réel ou bien imaginaire les transports vers d'autres parties de la ville, des espaces ruraux, et au travers des frontières de la nation. En illustrant comment des mobilités significatives peuvent être pour la survie quotidienne, cet article contribue à la ‘tournure de la mobilité’ dans les sciences sociales qui ont négligé l'importance de la mobilité pour les subsistances au sud mondial.
En Africa, jóvenes están involucrados con un mundo globalizado de flujos y movimientos pero están madurando en ambientes caracterizados por incertidumbre, dificultad económica y desempleo. Utilizando investigación conducido en Madina, un suburb de Accra, una perspectiva de navegación social está adoptada para explorar la movilidad diaria de jóvenes y sus aspiraciones para movilidad en el futuro. Dando luz a el significado que los jóvenes se escriban al movimiento, y por analizar sus movimientos como tácticas de navegación social, la importancia de movilidad espacial en la bien de los jóvenes y sus procesos de madurez social están ilustrados. Jóvenes se encuentran que su movilidad está encapsulado por una cantidad de factores incluyendo características del mercado laboral, relaciones de genero y generaciones, y su ubicación espacial en las afueras de la ciudad y al margen del mundo. A pesar de esto, ni su movilidad diaria ni su imaginación espacial los restringen a Madina; viajes verdaderos o imaginados los llevan a otros partes de la ciudad, a zonas rurales y a través las fronteras nacionales. Por ilustrar lo tal significado de movilidad para la sobrevivencia diaria, este papel se contribuye a la ‘vuelta a movilidad’ en las ciencias sociales del cual ha omitido la importancia de movilidad en los sustentos de los países del Sur.
