Critical artistic interventions into the geopolitical spaces of islands

Abstract

Something about the apparent romanticism of islands prompts creative reflections such as those comprising visual artworks in the Dis-covery exhibition touring Australia for 2 years from 2011. The exhibition forms the basis for this paper, written by its progenitor and curator—an artist, and its essayist—a cultural geographer. The curatorial premise was that islands and island cultures are at risk from global and multinational forces, as well as from amplified local impacts internal to the limits of their boundaries. In turn, the exhibition's aim was to trouble the layered cultural clichés that represent island conditions especially in terms of the romantic. Participating artists—all of whom have lived on islands—were invited to explore how islands and romanticism are both containers for disparate yet overlapping ideas, among them references to imagination, projected desire, unsatisfied longing, rising tides, exoticism, resource mining, militarism and marginalization. Drawing on conversations with the artists, and on their writings and works, this paper captures insightful reflections about islands, arts and the geopolitical imagination; reveals significant artistic interventions into the geopolitical spaces of islands; and underscores the productive relations that derive from critical and creative engagements between geography and art.

Il y a un romantisme apparent inhérent aux îles qui suscite des réflexions créatives telles que les œuvres d'art qui faisait partie de la exposition « Découverte » en tournée en Australie pendant deux ans depuis 2011. L'exposition sert de base de cet article, écrit par sa promotrice et conservatrice, une artiste, ainsi que son essayiste, un géographe culturel (Ndt: Il n'est pas clair quel auteur corresponde à quel rôle ci-dessus; je fais l'accord de genre pour ces métiers selon l'ordre des auteurs.). On partait de la prémisse conservatrice que les îles se voient menacées par des forces globales et multinationales ainsi que par les impacts locaux amplifiés qui se trouvent à l'intérieur de leurs frontières. Le but de l'exposition était par conséquence de bouleverser les clichés culturels en couches qui représentent les conditions des îles selon les notions romantiques dans l'art et dans la culture. On a appelé les artistes invités – dont tous ont habité les îles – à examiner les îles ainsi que le romantisme comme conteneurs pour les idées hétérogènes mais chevauchant, dont l'imagination, le désir projeté, la convoitise inassouvie, les marées en hausse, exotisme, exploitation minière, militarisme, et la marginalisation. En tirant des conversations avec les artistes ainsi que leurs œuvres artistiques et écrites, cet article saisit leurs réflexions perspicaces sur les îles, les arts, et l'imagination géopolitique. En outre l'article révèle les interventions artistiques importantes sur les espaces géopolitiques des îles et souligne les relations productrices qui proviennent de la rencontre critique et créative entre la géographie et l'art.

Algo sobre el romanticismo aparente de islas se provoca reflexiones creativas como las obras visuales de la exhibición Des-cubrimiento que hizo una gira por Australia por dos años, comenzando en el 2011. La exhibición se forma el base de este artículo, escrito por su conservador – un artista, y su ensayista – un geógrafo cultural. La premisa curatorial fue que islas y sus culturas están en peligro por los esfuerzos globales y multinacionales, y también por los impactos internos locales a los limites de sus fronteras. En cambio, el propósito de la exhibición fue problematizar los clichés culturales que representan las condiciones de las islas a la luz de romanticismo en arte y el romántico en la cultura. Artistas participantes – todos los cuales han vivido en islas – fueron invitados para explorar como islas y el romanticismo son ambos recipientes por ideas distintos pero traslapadas, entre ellos referencias a imaginación, deseo proyectado, anhelo insatisfecho, oleadas crecientes, exotismo, minería de recursos, militarismo y marginalización. Llevando de conversaciones con los artistas, y de sus escrituras y obras, este artículo se captura sus reflejos intuitivos sobre las islas, arte y la imaginación geopolítica; se revela intervenciones artísticos significativos en los espacios geopolíticos de islas; y se subraya las relaciones productivas que provienen de involucramientos críticos y creativos entre geografía y arte.
