Youth organizations and the reproduction of nationalism in Britain: the role of Urdd Gobaith Cymru

Abstract

Youth organizations have long played significant roles in promoting particular forms of nationalism among young people in the UK. To date, however, academic studies of UK youth organizations have been Anglocentric, focusing on youth organizations associated with a hegemonic British state and imperial project. This paper seeks to show how youth organizations have also been used to promote alternative forms of nationalism in the UK, which have sought to challenge a British state and imperial project. Focusing explicitly on Wales, it examines how Urdd Gobaith Cymru – the Welsh League of Youth – has played a significant role over the past 90 years in promoting a Welsh and Welsh-speaking citizenship amongst Welsh youth. Drawing on documentary and archival research, the paper discusses how the organization has fostered particular practices and identities among its members and the way in which these have been challenged in recent years; most notably as a result of a decline in the numbers of Welsh speakers in Wales and changing configurations of the meanings of Welshness. The paper concludes by arguing for the need to take seriously the role played by youth organizations in helping to shape political geographies in a devolved Britain.

Depuis longtemps, les organizations de la jeunesse jouent des rôles importants dans la promotion de certaines formes d’identité nationale auprès des jeunes. Pourtant, jusqu’à présent, les recherches universitaires sur les organizations de la jeunesse du Royaume-Uni se sont concentrées sur les organizations anglaises seulement, associées à ce qui est purement britannique. Cet article s’attache à démontrer que les organizations de la jeunesse ont aussi servi à la promotion de formes alternatives d’identité au Royaume-Uni, qui ont cherché à remettre en cause la britannicité. En se concentrant explicitement sur le Pays de Galles, il examine en quoi Urdd Gobaith Cymru – la Guilde de l’Espoir du Pays de Galles – a joué un rôle important ces quatre-vingt-dix dernières années dans la promotion d’une identité nationale galloise et de langue galloise auprès de la jeunesse galloise. En s’appuyant sur la recherche de documents et d’archives, l’article traite de la façon dont l’organization a encouragé certaines pratiques et identités parmi ses membres et du fait que ces dernières ont été remises en cause ces dernières années ; plus particulièrement en raison du déclin du nombre de locuteurs de gallois au Pays de Galles et de l’évolution des configurations de ce que cela signifie d’être Gallois. L’article conclut avec l’affirmation de la nécessité de prendre au sérieux le rôle joué par les organizations de la jeunesse dans leur contribution à former des identités multiples dans une Grande-Bretagne décentralisée.

Resumen

Las organizaciones juveniles han desempeñado un papel importante en la promoción de formas particulares de la identidad nacional entre los jóvenes. Hasta la fecha, sin embargo, los estudios académicos de las organizaciones juveniles del Reino Unido han sido anglo-céntricos, centrándose en las organizaciones juveniles asociadas a lo británico. En este trabajo se pretende mostrar cómo se han utilizado también las organizaciones de jóvenes para promover formas alternativas de identidad en el Reino Unido, que han tratado de desafiar a lo británico. Centrándose explícitamente en Gales, este trabajo examina cómo Urdd Gobaith Cymru – Gremio de la esperanza de Gales – ha jugado un papel significativo en los últimos noventa años en la promoción de la identidad galesa y de habla galesa nacional entre jóvenes galeses. Basándose en investigación documental y de archivo, el estudio analiza cómo la organización ha fomentado prácticas e identidades particulares entre sus miembros y la forma en que éstas han sido impugnadas en los últimos años; sobre todo como resultado de una disminución en el número de hablantes de galés en Gales y del cambio de las configuraciones de los significados de lo que es ser galés. El documento concluye con el argumento de la necesidad de tomar en serio el papel que desempeñan las organizaciones juveniles para ayudar a dar forma a identidades múltiples en una Gran Bretaña transferida.
