Rethinking concepts of the strange and the stranger

Abstract

In this paper, we analyse debates regarding the strange and the stranger. In critiquing these debates in geography and the social sciences, we argue that the stranger as a term is often taken for granted and implies assumed knowledge. In deconstructing ‘the stranger’ in the complexities of the modern world, defined by hyper-mobility, super-diversity and increased contact with ‘strangers’, we question the way in which such definitions might lead us to new distinctions allowing us to think beyond the stranger as a figure in isolation to something more relational and complex in nature. In so doing, we flesh out a way in which the geographies of encounter and thinking across difference might build on these theoretical considerations to further knowledge across and beyond difference as identity category, social construct and lived materiality.

Résumé

Dans cet article, nous analysons les débats concernant l’étrange et l’étranger. En critiquant ces débats en géographie et sciences humaines et sociales, nous arguons que l’étranger en tant que terme est souvent considéré comme allant de soi et part du principe de sa connaissance implicite. En faisant la déconstruction de « l’étranger » dans les complexités du monde moderne, défini par l’hyper mobilité, la super diversité et le contact croissant avec les « étrangers », nous nous interrogeons sur la façon dont de telles définitions pourraient nous mener vers de nouvelles distinctions en nous permettant de penser à l’étranger au-delà de la figure isolée vers quelque chose de nature plus relationnelle et plus complexe. Ce faisant, nous développons une approche selon laquelle les géographies de la rencontre et la pensée au-delà de la différence pourraient ajouter à ces considérations théoriques pour approfondir des connaissances qui dépassent la différence en tant que catégorie d’identité, construction sociale et matérialité vécue.

Resumen

En este trabajo se analizan los debates en relación a lo desconocido y al desconocido. Al criticar estos debates en la geografía y las ciencias sociales, se sostiene que el concepto de ‘el desconocido’ a menudo se da por sentado e implica un conocimiento asumido. En la deconstrucción del ‘desconocido’ en las complejidades del mundo moderno, definido por la híper-movilidad, la súper-diversidad y un mayor contacto con ‘desconocidos’, se cuestiona la forma en que dichas definiciones nos podrían conducir a nuevas distinciones permitiéndonos pensar más allá del desconocido como una figura en forma aislada a algo más relacional y complejo en naturaleza. De este modo, se complementa la forma en el que las geografías de encuentro y pensamiento a través de la diferencia podrían desarrollarse a partir de estas consideraciones teóricas para un mayor conocimiento a través y más allá de la diferencia como categoría de identidad, construcción social y materialidad vivida.

1. Iveson’s work here develops other considerations such as that presented by Allen (2004) with regard to her discussion on friendship and political friendship. Here Allen’s (2004) presents the notion of friendship as not simply an emotion but also as practice (p. xxi). Therefore, we ask to what extent can the stranger itself be seen as practice, rather than as figure. The idea of stranger as practice goes beyond the binary assumptions presented above and allows us to think of the concept of something that is truly fluid and dynamic.
