ABSTRACT
The religious climate caused significant changes over the last few decades which led to intense debates about post-secularism in Western Europe. However, there is particularly a distinct lack of analyses of the features of post-secularism in post-communist cities. The paper draws on the case study of Prague where the religious landscape is in many ways unique in a European context because of its highly secularized society. Nevertheless, Prague also experienced a revival of religious life, which has found expression in the religious landscape (not only) through the emergence of new sacral structures, pluralization of religion and post-secular rapprochement in religious institutions. The paper examines the convergent and contradictory processes shaping the religious and non-religious landscape in Prague and therefore opens the discussion about post-secularism in post-communist context. The results point to the importance of historical, social, and urban development for the new geographies of religion. New areas of research should also draw attention on the new religious movements and alternative spirituality which helps to explain the relationship between sacred and secular phenomena in current European society and space and the re-definition of the minority role of religion in the secular society.
RÉSUMÉ
Le climat religieux a occasionné des changements importants pendant ces dernières décennies, ce qui a mené à d’intenses débats sur la post laïcité dans l’Europe occidentale. Pourtant, il y a en particulier un manque d’analyse certain des particularités de la post laïcité dans les villes de l’après communisme. Cet article s’appuie sur le cas d’étude de Prague où le paysage religieux est unique sous beaucoup d’angles dans le contexte européen en raison de sa société particulièrement laïcisée. Prague a néanmoins connu une renaissance de la vie religieuse, qui a trouvé une expression dans le paysage religieux (pas seulement) à travers l’émergence de nouvelles structures sacrées, la pluralisation de la religion et le rapprochement post laïque des institutions religieuses.Cet article examine les processus convergents et contradictoires qui façonnent le paysage religieux et non religieux à Prague et ouvre donc la discussion sur l’après laïcité dans le contexte post communiste. Les résultats montrent l’importance du développement historique, social et urbain pour les nouvelles géographies de la religion. De nouvelles sections de recherche devraient aussi attirer l’attention sur les nouveaux mouvements religieux et la spiritualité alternative qui aide à expliquer le rapport entre les phénomènes sacrés et laïques dans la société européenne actuelle et la redéfinition du rôle minoritaire de la religion dans la société laïque.
RESUMEN
El clima religioso ha producido cambios significativos en las últimas décadas que han llevado a intensos debates sobre el post-secularismo en Europa occidental. Sin embargo, existe particularmente una clara falta de análisis de las características del post-secularismo en ciudades post-comunistas. El documento se basa en el estudio de Praga, donde el paisaje religioso es en muchos aspectos único en un contexto europeo debido a su sociedad altamente secularizada. Sin embargo, Praga también experimentó un resurgimiento de la vida religiosa, que ha encontrado expresión en el paisaje religioso (no sólo) a través de la aparición de nuevas estructuras sagradas, la pluralización de la religión y el acercamiento post-secular en instituciones religiosas. El artículo examina los procesos convergentes y contradictorios que configuran el paisaje religioso y no religioso en Praga y por lo tanto abre la discusión sobre el post-secularismo en un contexto post-comunista. Los resultados apuntan a la importancia del desarrollo histórico, social y urbano para las nuevas geografías de la religión. Los nuevos campos de investigación deberían también poner atención en los nuevos movimientos religiosos y la espiritualidad alternativa que ayuda a explicar la relación entre los fenómenos sagrados y seculares en la sociedad y el espacio europeo actuales y la redefinición del papel minoritario de la religión en la sociedad secular.
