Elemental mobilities: atmospheres, matter and cycling amid the weather-world

Abstract

Everyday experiences of movement have become a central concern for social and cultural geography in recent years. Work here has begun to unpack the specific meanings, imaginaries and experiences that come to be bound up with mobile bodies and their practices. However, it has been suggested that more could be done to examine the material, elementary, molecular and physical aspects of movement which are significant to the experience of being on the move. Therefore, this paper explores the experience of cycling amid such turbulent ‘elemental’ materialities. Such ‘matters’ matter to cycling in the way that they (re)make both mobile environments and mobile subjectivities. Cyclists come to have quite immediate and intimate relationships with the material and ‘elementary’ aspects of the environments they move through given their relatively unmediated encounters with them. This paper draws on video-interview based research with 24 commuter cyclists in Plymouth, UK to consider cyclists’ experience of atmospheric conditions in terms of air’s force and air quality. From this, the paper reflects on how the experience of such ‘elemental’ matters might be significant to future research on and planning for cycling.

Résumé

Les expériences quotidiennes du mouvement ont acquis un intérêt central dans la géographie sociale et culturelle ces dernières années. Les présents travaux ont commencé à déballer les significations spécifiques, les imaginaires et les expériences qui en viennent à être liés aux corps mobiles et à leurs pratiques. Pourtant, il a été suggéré que l’on pourrait faire plus pour examiner les aspects matériels, élémentaires, moléculaires et physiques du mouvement qui sont importants pour l’expérience du fait d’être en mouvement. Ainsi, cet article explore l’expérience de faire du vélo au centre de telles matérialités turbulentes d’« éléments ». De telles « matières » sont importantes pour le cyclisme de telle sorte qu’elles (re)font à la fois les environnements mobiles et les subjectivités mobiles. Les cyclistes en viennent à avoir des rapports tout à fait immédiats et intimes avec les aspects matériels et « élémentaires » des environnements au travers desquels ils se déplacent, étant donné les rencontres relativement immédiates avec ces aspects. Cet article s’appuie sur une recherche à partir d’entretiens filmés avec 24 cyclistes qui font des trajets quotidiens à Plymouth au Royaume-Uni, pour considérer l’expérience des cyclistes des conditions atmosphériques en matière de force de l’air et de qualité de l’air. A partir de là, l’article réfléchit sur la manière dont l’expérience de ces questions « d’éléments » pourrait avoir une incidence importante sur la recherche à venir dans le cyclisme et son organisation.

Resumen

Las experiencias cotidianas de movimiento se han convertido en una preocupación central para la geografía social y cultural en los últimos años. El trabajo aquí ha comenzado a revelar los significados específicos, los imaginarios y las experiencias que se vinculan con los cuerpos móviles y sus prácticas. Sin embargo, se ha sugerido que se podría hacer más para examinar los aspectos materiales, elementales, moleculares y físicos del movimiento que son importantes para la experiencia de estar en movimiento. Por lo tanto, este artículo explora la experiencia del ciclismo entre tales materialidades ‘elementales’ turbulentas. Estos ‘asuntos’ son importantes para el ciclismo en la forma en la que (re)hacen tanto los entornos como las subjetividades móviles. Los ciclistas llegan a tener relaciones bastante inmediatas e íntimas con los aspectos materiales y ‘elementales’ de los entornos que atraviesan puesto que sus encuentros son relativamente sin mediación con ellos. Este documento se basa en la investigación basada en entrevistas de video con 24 ciclistas de lugares cercanos a Plymouth, en el Reino Unido, para considerar la experiencia de los ciclistas sobre las condiciones atmosféricas en términos de la fuerza y la calidad del aire. A partir de esto, el documento reflexiona sobre cómo la experiencia de estos asuntos ‘elementales’ podría ser importante para la investigación futura y la planificación del ciclismo.

3. The majority of the cyclists included were aged between 30 and 50, with a gender split of 13 men and 11 women. All cyclists had cycled in Plymouth for at least 2 years and normally commuted by bike 2–3 times per week as well as cycling recreationally.

4. This situation is changing, primarily given the introduction of hybrid engines in buses in some places (such as London). However, at the time of writing, such hybrid buses are not found in Plymouth.
