Vaping like a chimney; skeuomorphic assemblages and post-smoking geographies

ABSTRACT

This paper explores the emergence of vaping (using e-cigarettes) as a nascent practice that is set to distinguish itself from smoking, yet one which is at the same time constrained by the same socio-cultural geographies of exclusion. Geographers have of late showed an interest in smoking but vaping has received little attention, and even beyond Geography, the burgeoning scholarship on the e-cigarette remains mostly within pharmacology and public health studies. This paper addresses these absences. The paper proposes an understanding of vaping as a skeuomorphic assemblage, which can help account for some of the discursive indeterminacy that stems from a design that, to a greater or lesser extent, mimics a practice that has been deemed a health, economic and moral hazard. Further, the example of vaping explored through the notion of skeuomorphism reveals that assemblages, and the bodies and technologies that constitute them are always social, political but above all historical. By drawing on an ethnographic study of vaping conducted in the UK, the paper examines how skeuomorphic assemblages gather between technology, body and the everyday physical and social environment. Bringing personal experience as a smoker to bear, it also considers the spatio-temporal, sensorial and embodied differences between smoking and vaping geographies.

RÉSUMÉ

Cet article explore l’émergence du vapotage en tant que pratique naissante en voie de se distinguer de la tabagie, et qui est pourtant en même temps limitée par les mêmes géographies socio-culturelles d’exclusion. Les géographes ont dernièrement montré un intérêt pour la tabagie mais le vapotage a reçu très peu d’intérêt et même au-delà de la géographie, la recherche naissante sur la cigarette électronique reste cantonnée au sein de la pharmacologie et des études de santé publique. Cet article remédie à ces lacunes. Il propose une compréhension du vapotage comme un assemblage skeuomorphique qui peut aider à expliquer l’indétermination des discours, qui tient son origine d’une invention qui mimique, dans une plus ou moins grande mesure, une pratique qui a été reconnue comme un risque écononomique, moral et sanitaire. De plus, l’exemple du vapotage exploré à travers la notion du skeuomorphisme révèle que les assemblages, les corps et les technologies qui les constituent sont toujours sociaux, politiques et par-dessus tout, historiques.

En s’appuyant sur une étude ethnographique sur le vapotage effectuée au Royaume-Uni, cet article examine comment les assemblages skeuomorphiques se regroupent entre la technologie, le corps et l’environnement quotidien physique et social. En plus de l’apport personnel de mon expérience en tant que fumeur, l’article considère aussi les différences spatio-temporelles, sensorielles et incarnées entre les géographies de la tabagie et du vapotage.

Este documento explora la aparición de los cigarrillos electrónicos como una práctica naciente que se establece para distinguirse del tabaquismo, pero al mismo tiempo como una práctica que está restringida por las mismas geografías socioculturales de exclusión. Los geógrafos han mostrado últimamente un interés en el fumar, pero el fumar con cigarrillos electrónicos ha recibido poca atención, e incluso más allá de la geografía, la creciente investigación sobre el cigarrillo electrónico se mantiene principalmente dentro de los estudios de farmacología y salud pública. Este artículo aborda estas ausencias. El artículo propone una comprensión de esta práctica como un montaje esqueumorfo, que puede ayudar a explicar parte de la indeterminación discursiva que deriva de un diseño que, en mayor o menor medida, imita una práctica que se ha considerado un riesgo para la salud, la economía y la moral. Además, el ejemplo de esta práctica explorado a través de la noción del esqueumorfismo revela que los montajes y los cuerpos y las tecnologías que los constituyen son siempre sociales, políticos, pero sobre todo históricos.

Al basarse en un estudio etnográfico del fumar cigarrillos electrónicos realizado en el Reino Unido, el artículo examina cómo se forman los montajes esqueumorfos entre la tecnología, el cuerpo y el entorno físico y social cotidiano. Al incorporar una experiencia personal como fumador, también el trabajo considera las diferencias espaciotemporales, sensoriales y corporales entre las geografías de tabaquismo y las de fumar cigarrillos electrónicos.

2. This is not to say that Gilbert’s device was the only such ‘safer’ alternative to be devised. Parascandola (Citation2005) has traced the history of ‘safer cigarettes’ to the late 19th century, but it was not until the 1950s that tobacco companies started investing into research and development of ‘less hazardous cigarettes’, often in close collaboration with both government and academia.
