Everyday rhythms and aircraft noise in New York City

ABSTRACT

This article argues for the inclusion of aircraft noise in considerations of everyday rhythms. Informed by Lefebvre’s rhythmanalytical thinking, in conjunction with sound studies and affect theory, the article expands the literature concerned with the conflicts and confluences of rhythms in everyday life. Building on in-depth interviews, it presents first-hand accounts of the experience of aircraft noise from the perspective of anti-aircraft noise activists in New York City, to demonstrate how rhythms of aircraft noise may come to set the pace of everyday life and how interviewees negotiate their imposition. It particularly attends to the embodied experience of aircraft noise and its effects on sleep. Through combining conceptual thinking and empirical findings, the article discovers aircraft noise as an instance of power, which may order and disorder rhythms and everyday life.

Este artículo aboga por la inclusión del ruido de los aviones en consideraciones de los ritmos cotidianos. Informado por el pensamiento ritmo-analítico de Lefebvre, estudios del sonido y teoría del afecto, el artículo amplía la literatura relacionada con los conflictos y las confluencias de los ritmos en la vida cotidiana. Basándose en entrevistas en profundidad, el artículo presenta relatos de primera mano sobre la experiencia del ruido de los aviones desde la perspectiva de los activistas contra este ruido en la ciudad de Nueva York, para demostrar cómo los ritmos del ruido de los aviones pueden marcar el ritmo de la vida cotidiana y cómo los entrevistados negocian su imposición. En particular, el artículo considera la experiencia incorporada del ruido de los aviones y sus efectos sobre el sueño. Cet article soutient que le bruit généré par le transport aérien devrait être inclus dans les rythmes quotidiens. Guidé par la rythmanalytique chez Lefebvre, combinée à des recherches sur les sons et la théorie des affects, il enrichit la littérature consacrée aux conflits et aux confluences des rythmes de la vie quotidienne. Il présente, en s’appuyant sur des entrevues détaillées, des témoignages directs sur l’expérience du niveau sonore du transport aérien du point de vue des activistes luttant contre le bruit des avions à New York, pour démontrer comment le rythme de ce bruit peut donner la cadence à la vie quotidienne et comment les personnes interrogées gèrent cette contrainte. Il s’intéresse tout particulièrement à l’expérience physique de la résonance sonore du trafic aérien et ses effets sur le sommeil. Avec l’association de pensée conceptuelle et d’observations empiriques, cet article découvre que le bruit des avions est une instance de pouvoir qui peut organiser et désorganiser les rythmes de la vie quotidienne.
