Building relations: assembling an auto-geography of the diplomatic home

ABSTRACT

Geographic literature on diplomatic spatiality has largely focused on the official sites of diplomacy, while neglecting the importance of the diplomatic home in everyday working life. Considering this gap in the literature, the present article extends the recent interest in critical geographies of home and considers its potential in furthering our understanding of interstate diplomacy. The paper assembles the affective atmospheres of the diplomatic home through a bottom-up perspective that combines the author’s personal experiences as a Finnish career diplomat inhabiting a middle-class Turkish apartment with the oral accounts of his houseguests. Attention is given to the creation of images of national culture and design through micro-scale country-branding efforts. The analysis shows that while home atmospheres can be manipulated for diplomatic ends, there are also disjunctures between idealised designs and the embodied experiences of diplomatic houseguests. The article ends by discussing the implications of the present study for the literature on critical geographies of diplomacy.

La literatura geográfica sobre la espacialidad diplomática se ha centrado en gran medida en los sitios oficiales de la diplomacia, al tiempo que ha descuidado la importancia del hogar diplomático en la vida laboral cotidiana. Tomando en cuenta esta brecha en la literatura, el presente artículo amplía el interés reciente en las geografías críticas del hogar y considera su potencial para ampliar nuestra comprensión de la diplomacia interestatal. El artículo construye las atmósferas afectivas del hogar diplomático a través de una perspectiva ascendente que combina las experiencias personales del autor como un diplomático de carrera finlandés que vive en un departamento turco de clase media con los relatos orales de sus invitados. Se presta atención a la creación de imágenes de la cultura y diseño nacionales a través de esfuerzos de branding de país a microescala. El análisis muestra que, si bien las atmósferas hogareñas pueden manipularse con fines diplomáticos, también existen disyuntivas entre los diseños idealizados y las experiencias encarnadas de los invitados diplomáticos. El artículo termina discutiendo las implicaciones del presente estudio para la literatura sobre geografías críticas de la diplomacia.

Les études géographiques sur la spatialité de la diplomatie se sont principalement focalisées sur les lieux officiels de la diplomatie, tout en minimisant l’importance des foyers des diplomates dans leur vie professionnelle quotidienne. Pour combler les lacunes dans ce domaine, cet article amplifie l’intérêt récent porté à la géographie critique du foyer et examine son potentiel pour approfondir notre compréhension de la diplomatie entre États. Il agence les atmosphères affectives des foyers diplomatiques à l’aide d’une perspective qui part de la base et combine l’expérience propre à l’auteur, un diplomate de carrière finlandais qui vit dans un appartement bourgeois en Turquie, avec les témoignages verbaux de ses visiteurs. On accorde de l’attention à la création d’images de culture et de conception nationales par le biais de la promotion de l’image de marque nationale sur une micro-échelle. L’analyse montre que tandis que les atmosphères des foyers peuvent être manipulées à des fins diplomatiques, il y a aussi des disjonctions entre les conceptions idéalisées et les expériences concrètes des visiteurs diplomatiques. L’article conclut avec une réflexion sur les implications de cette recherche pour les travaux sur la géographie critique de la diplomatie.
