The domestic bathroom: a strongbox for gender performativity and transgression

ABSTRACT

Public bathrooms are key sites for understanding gender identities, gender expressions, and sexual orientations that are out of the norm. Research has shown that they are places of discrimination but they also provide opportunities for transgression. Domestic bathrooms, however, have not received much attention. Through the experiences of 27 LGBT+ youth from Bages, an interior region of Catalonia, this research shows how the bathroom at home is a significant place where gender and sexual norms are reproduced and transgressed. Using a qualitative methodology, I examine how LGBT+ youth experience the domestic bathroom, both in the family home and their own home, according to their age, gender, and sexual orientation. The domestic bathroom is shown to be relevant in terms of gender performativity and sexuality and a place of privacy where gender expression is tested and sexual pleasure is enjoyed. The study sheds light on the understanding of how social norms around gender and sexuality work, destabilizing the conception of cisheterosexuality as something innate.

Resumen

Los baños públicos son sitios clave para comprender identidades de género, expresiones de género y orientaciones sexuales que están fuera de la norma. Las investigaciones han demostrado que son lugares de discriminación pero que también brindan oportunidades para la transgresión. Los baños domésticos, sin embargo, no han recibido mucha atención. A través de las experiencias de 27 jóvenes LGBT+ de Bages, una región del interior de Cataluña, esta investigación muestra cómo el baño doméstico es un lugar significativo donde se reproducen y transgreden las normas sexuales y de género. Utilizando una metodología cualitativa, examino cómo los jóvenes LGBT+ experimentan el baño doméstico, tanto en el hogar familiar como en su propio hogar, según su edad, género y orientación sexual. El baño doméstico se muestra relevante en términos de performatividad de género y sexualidad, y un lugar de privacidad donde se pone a prueba la expresión de género y se disfruta del placer sexual. Este estudio vislumbra cómo funcionan las normas sociales en torno al género y la sexualidad, desestabilizando la concepción de la cis-heterosexualidad como algo innato.

Résumé

Les toilettes publiques sont des endroits essentiels pour comprendre les identités de genre, les expressions de genre et les orientations sexuelles qui sortent de la norme. La recherche a révélé qu’elles sont des lieux de discrimination, mais offrent aussi des possibilités de transgression. Les toilettes privées, elles, n’ont pas attiré autant d’attention. Par le biais des expériences vécues de 27 LGBT+ du Bages, une région de la Catalogne, cette étude présente les toilettes privées du domicile comme un endroit important, où les normes de genre et de sexe sont reproduites et transgressées. À l’aide d’une méthodologie qualitative, j’analyse la manière dont les jeunes LGBT+ font l’expérience des toilettes, dans la demeure familiale et dans leur propre logement, selon leur âge, leur genre et leur orientation sexuelle. Les toilettes privées s’avèrent pertinentes en matière de performativité de genre et de sexualité et sont aussi un lieu d’intimité où l’on teste les expressions de genre et où on éprouve du plaisir sexuel. Cette étude renforce la compréhension de l’opération des normes sociales autour du genre et de la sexualité, et déstabilise le concept de la cishétérosexualité comme étant innée.
