Severe Tramadol dependence in a female without any concomitant substance use

ABSTRACT

Tramadol is a synthetic opioid that is being widely prescribed for moderate to severe pain and management of opioid withdrawal state. However, the potential of its misuse and dependence is still under-recognized. Casual prescription of opioids is a pressing issue that needs significant attention. Moreover, the number of females seeking help in Addiction treatment centers is much fewer compared to males which is one of the major factors responsible for incorrect estimation of Tramadol misuse among females. We present a case of severe injectable Tramadol dependence in a female which led to multiple physical and psychological complications. The case report highlights the need for strict regulations for accessing Tramadol by the patients and active monitoring for its impending dependence potential.
