Commentary: Solving the mystery of the long March, 1934–1936

Pages 57-69 | Published online: 05 Jul 2019

Abstract

The Long March remains an untold story. This is so despite the existence of these four book-length studies that make a serious effort to recount that heroic tale of adventure first offered to an English-language audience by Edgar Snow in 1938. Even though there are also many other books and articles that try to deal with all or part of this epic military retreat, a complete picture continues to elude us. Instead, we have the blurred photo that is the Long March myth.

Due to space considerations the Bulletin of Concerned Asian Scholars has not included some of the lengthy appendixes that were meant to accompany this commentary. These appendixes are available from the Bulletin at no charge and consist of additional information intended to accompany map B and lists alphabetized by authors of: (1) forty-two references to materials about the Long March that were published in Chinese since the appearance of Dick Wilson's study, and (2) all the English-language references accompanying this commentary.
