Sustainable asphalt pavements: A current challenge to define the future

The International Society for Asphalt Pavements (ISAP) is a volunteer organisation of professionals and experts in asphalt engineering whose goal is to share the latest in leading edge asphalt pavement technology worldwide. The ISAP Conferences and Symposia are Asphalt Pavements have been the major source of state-of-the-art and state-of-the-practice information in asphalt technology since its first meeting in Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA in 1962. The ISAP Symposium meets every four years (two years offset from the ISAP conference series), and the 2022 symposium was held in San Jose, Costa Rica, on 20–22 September 2022. Unlike ISAP conference, the ISAP symposia are typically tied to a theme related to current need for research and development in the field of asphalt pavements. The theme for 2022 symposium was ‘Sustainable asphalt pavements: A current challenge to define the future’.

There were more than 190 participants to the symposium from 28 countries and four continents. This was one of the first international event for asphalt materials community after the COVID pandemic. The presentations and discussions covered a wide range of topics within pavement infrastructure. Such events provide opportunities to share and learn ideas and discuss how the best available knowledge may be transformed into applications that can enhance people's lives, respecting the environment with an eye on future generations. ISAP promotes such diverse gatherings and helps building a creative environment to keep turning the wheel of knowledge.

This special issue, originated from ISAP2022 symposium, provides a compilation of 19 rigorously selected and reviewed articles that advance the state of the knowledge in the domain of sustainable asphalt pavements. These papers present the content of the best extended abstracts and presentations that were selected during the ISAP2022 by an international scientific committee of the symposium.

The ISAP2022 symposium was coordinated with the activities of the ISAP Technical committees: Asphalt Pavement and Environment (APE) and Pavement Field Evaluation (PFE). The organisation of ISAP2022 conference was undertaken by Luis Loria Salazar (Conference Co-chairman, University Issac Newton, Costa Rica), and Gabriele Tebaldi (Co-chairman, University of Parma, Italy).
