1. Whereas orthodoxy relates to convention and denotes what is considered to be ‘proper’ and ‘improper’, or ‘right’ and ‘wrong’, doxa is internalized as an accepted and unquestioned ‘given’. Thus, social constructions are ‘naturalized’ and rendered ‘obvious’ (Bourdieu Citation1986, 471).
2. ‘Sex is more than just biology’, the title of an article in the Times Educational Supplement, arose from an interview with Professor Michael Reiss during the Second Biennial International SRE Conference held at the Institute of Education, University of London in May 2005. The ‘Cultural Aspects of Sex/Sexuality Education’ conference shifted the research focus away from human reproduction to the roles played by culture in SRE.
