Editors’ introduction
Across the globe, doctoral education is in the throes of change stemming from a variety of causes, including massification, diversification, internationalisation, capitalisation, and many others. The aims of this special issue are to provide an overview of these changes and to describe aspects of their impact in fourteen countries. The latter are drawn from every region of the world and collectively account for nearly two-thirds of global doctoral enrolments and 70% of doctoral graduates. For each country, contributors were invited to write an article from what they saw as an appropriate perspective on the major changes in doctoral education in recent years, and each case study constitutes a stand-alone contribution to the relevant national literature on doctoral education. Then, in a concluding article, the editors – themselves from three different continents – aggregate the findings and present initial conclusions about the global pattern of change in doctoral education as well as future research directions.
