Complexity in cultural identity

Pages 165-177 | Published online: 17 May 2010

Abstract

Despite their diverse national backgrounds, 28 interviewees speak similarly about the complexity of the cultural realities with which they live, and refuse to be pinned down to specific cultural types. While nation is of great importance, unless personally inspiring, it tends to be an external force which is in conflict with a wide variety of layered cultural realities which collect around personal life trajectories (including religion, family history, community, occupation, politics and language), often in multiple national locations. These findings are resonant of social action theory, where culture is in dialogue with, rather than defined by, social structure.

Serch eu cefndiroedd cenedlaethol gwahanol, tebyg yw tystiolaeth 28 o unigolion am gymhlethdod realiti diwylliannol eu bywydau, ac ni ellir eu diffinio yn ôl mathau diwylliannol penodol. Er bod cenedl yn bwysig, os nad ydyw'n ysbrydoliaeth bersonol tuedda i fod yn ffactor allanol sy'n gwrthdaro yn erbyn amrywiaeth eang o haenau o realitïau cymdeithasol sy'n crynhoi o amgylch llwybrau bywyd personol (yn cynnwys crefydd, hanes teuluol, cymuned, delwedd gorfforol, galwedigaeth, gwleidyddiaeth ac iaith), yn aml mewn lleoliadau cenedlaethol amryfal. Mae'r casgliadau hyn yn adlewyrchu theori gweithredu cymdeithasol, ble mae diwylliant a strwythur cymdeithasol yn cyd-ddylanwadu ar ei gilydd, yn hytrach na bod yr ail yn diffinio'r cyntaf.
