Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine wetland utilisation and protection through the lens of ecotourism. More specifically, we explore the conditions around the use of Bogotá’s wetlands and how such use has contributed to significant spatial fragmentation by wetland zone reduction mainly by illegal landfilling and institutional turmoil generated by inconsistent governmental management, corruption and burocracy-related issues. The foregoing discussion provides scope into the various challenges and opportunities confronting the development of restoration and ecotourism in the wetlands of Bogotá. The proposed framework is felt to be an important contribution to the literature on ecotourism development and conservation because of the challenges that prevent ecotourism from being an agent of positive change. It is a study of the identification of the factors that work against development and conservation.
