1 The Professorship is named for Robert C. Wood (1923–2005), a leading public policy intellectual and practitioner of the latter half of the twentieth century. He served as US Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, superintendent of schools in Boston, the director of Greater Boston's transit system, and for seven years, as president of the University of Massachusetts system. Wood understood the powerful and important role of government in peoples’ lives.
