Zehra F. Kabasakal Arat

Zehra F. Kabasakal Arat is Professor of Political Science at Purchase College of the State University of New York (SUNY). Her research focuses on human rights, with an emphasis on women's rights. Her publications include Democracy and Human Rights in Developing Countries (1991), Deconstructing Images of ‘The Turkish Woman’ (1998), Non-State Actors in the Human Rights Universe (2006), Human Rights Worldwide (2006), and Human Rights in Turkey (2007). Currently, she is working on a project that examines human rights discourse and practices in Turkey since the 1920s. I am grateful to my assistant Fernando Gonzales for his meticulous work in preparing the article for publication. This article was prepared for the panel “Revisiting David P. Forsythe's Contributions to Human Rights,” held at the Annual Conference of the American Political Science Association, September 1–4, 2010, Seattle, Washington.
