Abstract
Religious beliefs have had a key role in shaping local responses to HIV and AIDS. As the world's largest Catholic country, Brazil is no exception. Yet little research has been conducted to document how religious doctrine is enacted in practice among its lay leaders and followers. In this article, we present ethnographic research from Recife, Brazil, conducted to understand the way in which religious doctrines are interpreted at a local level. Contextualised within the sociology of contemporary Brazilian Catholicism, we draw on interviews with clergy members, lay leaders, and parishioners to discuss how the Catholic Church's vision of sexuality translates into everyday lives of its followers. We explore the disjuncture between the Catholic ideals of fidelity and delaying sex until marriage with the everyday reality of the Church's followers, highlighting the role that gender plays in defining sexual roles and expectations. We conclude by posing questions for future research and HIV prevention strategies considering the formal institutional response of the Brazilian Catholic Church to AIDS on the one hand, and the social and cultural contexts in which Catholics live their daily lives on the other.

These three traditions do not exhaust the religious field in Brazil, where Judaism is an important part of the religious landscape, and where both Islam and a number of variants of Eastern or Oriental religions have made inroads in some sectors of the population. However, these other traditions are significantly smaller in Brazil in terms of numbers and appear to have had a much smaller impact on AIDS-related programmes or policies.

15. After speculating for a fair amount about this subject, we asked one of the lay leaders directly if he had ever betrayed his wife. He admitted, without too much difficulty, that he had betrayed her several times, justifying his actions as part of ‘being a man’. In fact, some of these ‘pulinhos’ (literally little jumps), a term used by the informant to indicate betrayal, occurred with women who also took part in church groups.
16. Gender inequality permeates many aspects of life and religious traditions in Brazil and may be one of the reasons why Margarida did not seek out other religious outlets after being barred from many Church activities. While we did not focus on this in our research, we recommend that future research can explore the ways in which constructions of gender and sexuality within religious traditions influence the decisions of followers to convert to other religions.

It is worth calling attention to the fact that although Catholicism allows condoms use when one of the partners is HIV positive, this information was not shared by those interviewed in Nova Guanabara. At the same time, although there is a debate about the possibility of divorce and remarriage among Catholic theologians (CitationRobinson n.d. ), in Brazil, there is still a position in the Church that impedes both.

19. The ‘Couples' Meeting with Christ’ is one of the mechanisms through which the Church transmits its key tenants of a successful marriage (see Machado Citation1996). The group is considered a service of the Catholic Church and its advice has been offered since 1970. In the Nova Guanabara community, weekly activities include prayer and discussions on topics related to married life and raising children in the Catholic faith. Group leaders emphasised that monogamy and fidelity were among the most important values reinforced through the meetings.
