From Embroidered Painting to Needle Words

Abstract

Starting from the unique branch of China’s traditional Jiangnan embroidery, titled embroidered painting, this paper analyzes the height of this phenomenon, expounds its research value of art history, and discusses its influence on today’s Chinese embroidery art. It thinks in parallel with the so-called “loom thinking” of the West, so as to draw out the concept of needle words and consider the works of several artists in the field of fiber art.

A writer, curator and artist, the Organizer of the international symposium of Hangzhou Triennial of Fiber Art in 2019, the Curator of Hangzhou Triennial of Fiber Art in 2016, and the Assistant Curator of Hangzhou Triennial of Fiber Art in 2013. Dr. Xu Jia received her B Arch Degree from Tongji University, Shanghai in 2008 and her PhD degree of Art History at China Academy of Art in 2016.
