Tihei mauri ora – contact, culture, and context

ABSTRACT

This article introduces and elaborates on the themes of PCE2021: ‘Tihei mauri ora – Contact, culture, and context’. It provides the background to the organizers’ thinking about these themes, and especially their focus on bicultural engagement in the context of life and therapeutic practice in Aotearoa New Zealand and, as such, offers an introduction to this special issue of papers from that conference.

Cet article présente et développe les thèmes du PCE2021 : « Tihei mauri ora – Contact, culture et contexte ». Il présente la réflexion de base des organisateurs sur ces thèmes et aborde en particulier leur focalisation sur l’engagement biculturel dans le contexte de la vie et de la pratique thérapeutique en Aotearoa Nouvelle-Zélande. À ce titre, il offre une introduction à ce numéro spécial d’articles de cette conférence.

Dieser Artikel stellt vertiefend die Themen der PCE2021 Konferenz vor: ‘Tihei mauri ora – Kontakt, Kultur und Kontext’. Er zeigt den gedanklichen Hintergrund der Organisatoren:innen zu diesen Themen, insbesondere deren Schwerpunkt ‘bikulturelles Engagement’ in Bezug auf das Leben und die therapeutische Praxis in Aotearoa Neuseeland. Damit gibt er eine Einführung zu dieser Spezialausgabe zur Konferenz

Este artículo presenta y elabora los temas de PCE2021: ‘Tihei mauri ora – Contacto, cultura y contexto’. Proporciona los antecedentes del pensamiento de los organizadores sobre estos temas, y especialmente su enfoque en el compromiso bicultural en el contexto de la vida y la práctica terapéutica en Aotearoa Nueva Zelanda y, como tal, ofrece una introducción a esta edición especial de documentos de esa conferencia.

Este artigo apresenta e elabora sobre os temas da conferência PCE2021: ‘Tihei mauri ora – Contacto, cultura e contexto’. Ele fornece o pano de fundo para o pensamento dos organizadores acerca destes temas, especialmente o seu foco no envolvimento bicultural, no contexto da vida e da prática terapêutica na Aotearoa Nova Zelândia e, como tal, oferece uma introdução a esta edição especial de artigos dessa conferência.

Keith Tudor

Keith Tudor is Professor of Psychotherapy at Auckland University of Technology (AUT), Aotearoa New Zealand, where he is currently engaged in establishing an entity for Research in the Psychological Therapies. He is the author and editor of many publication on person-centered psychology, including six books. He was also chair of the organizing committee of PCE2021, the 14th conference of the World Association held live in Auckland, Aotearoa New Zealand, and online in June 2001.

Brian Rodgers

Brian Rodgers is a senior lecturer and programme director for the counsellor education programmes at the University of Auckland, Aotearoa New Zealand. Brian has been a counsellor educator for over two decades at a number of institutions including Auckland University of Technology, University of Queensland in Australia, and University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland.

Valance Smith

Valance Smith is of Māori (Ngāti Mahuta, Te Parawhau, Te Uriroroi, Te Mahureure ki Whatitiri), English and Chinese descent. He is Assistant Pro-Vice Chancellor Māori Advancement providing academic and cultural leadership across the university. His current research includes mātauranga Māori solutions for Kauri dieback, and maramataka and its connection to physical activity.
