On compatibility conditions for singular surfaces – a general approach part I

Pages 3963-3981 | Received 12 May 2004, Accepted 22 Nov 2004, Published online: 21 Feb 2007

Abstract

The study provides a natural generalization and unification of the classical treatments of compatibility conditions for moving surfaces and curves as submanifolds of E 3. The motivation for such a generalization is twofold. First, it is desirable to exhibit the compatibility conditions in a single unified set of formulas expressed in terms of standard quantities from differential geometry and explicitly displaying the features that are common to all submanifolds regardless of their dimensions. Secondly, it may be of some benefit to the science of continuum mechanics to have a general theory which treats the phenomena connected with continua of diverse dimensions on an equal footing.
