Abstract

A unified description of quasicrystal plasticity in terms of a quantitative model using constitutive equations was presented by Feuerbacher and co-workers in 2001 Citation1. In a later work, the model was successfully applied to a wide range of experimental parameters where various stress–strain behaviours were observed Citation2. At high strain rates, for example, the occurrence of a low-strain work-hardening stage, the formation of a stress maximum at around 5%, and work softening at higher strains was observed. In the present work, the complex stress–strain behaviour of quasicrystals at high strain rates is analyzed in terms of the constitutive model. The evolution of the two microstructural parameters, the dislocation density and the order parameter, their interaction with other microstructural parameters and the influence on the macroscopic plastic deformation behaviour are analyzed and discussed.
