On crystal shear, lattice rotation and constraint stress in (1 1 0) channel die compression: rate-independent and viscoplastic analyses and predictions compared

Kerry S. Havner (2014) On crystal shear, lattice rotation and constraint stress in (110) channel die compression: rate-independent and viscoplastic analyses and predictions compared, Philosophical Magazine Vol. 94, No. 17, pp. 1924–1955. http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/14786435.2014.899441

The author regrets that the above article was published with errors.

I made an algebraic mistake in simplifying the general Equation (5) for horizontal shearing rate to the special case of the ‘Brass’ orientation and rate-independent theory. The third equation in the first line of Equation (F1), Appendix 6 (p.1954), should be

Fortunately, the numeric significance of the mistake is small, as follows.

In Table 11 (p.1946), the elastoplastic values for in Al and Cu, given there as 0.7063 and 0.7072, should be replaced by 0.7057 and 0.7089, respectively. Correspondingly, in Section 7.2, p.1947, the following changes should be made.

In the first paragraph, in reference to Al, the phrase “less than the elastoplastic result by only 0.094pct.” should be replaced by ‘equal to the elastoplastic result to at least 9 places.’

In the second paragraph, second-to-last sentence, in reference to Cu, the words “are greater than” should be replaced by ‘equal’; and the words “by only 0.232pct.” should be replaced by ‘to 8 significant figures.’

Finally, in the next-to-last paragraph of Section 8, p.1949, third through fifth lines, in the sentence stating that results between the theories are “essentially identical” for constraint stress and (negligible) lattice-rotation rate, the last phrase “and shear rates differ only by a few tenths of a percent.” should be replaced by ‘as are the shear rates’.
