Community‐based place meanings for park planning

Abstract

Place meanings provide visions for land‐use planning, are references to evaluate land‐uses, and act as baselines to assess environmental degradation. Roles for social science in park planning are becoming directed at understanding community‐based place meanings of stakeholders. Place meanings characterize reasons that an environment is valued and describe the uniqueness of a locale. Place meanings are characterized as being complex and difficult for people to know. The representation of place meanings are often embedded in stories of lived experiences, and the telling of these stories is audience sensitive. The lack of adequate venues to negotiate place meanings is a crisis in need of response by the park planning and leisure research community.

Résumé

Les frontières spatiales rendent plusieurs services : elle nous donne des sources de donnée pour la programmation et l'utilisation spatiale, et elle offre un contexte référentiel qui démontre l'impact anthropique et la dégradation écologique. En ce qui concerne les rôles des sciences sociales et la gestion des parcs, notre rôle comme chercheur est d'examiner et comprendre comment les acteurs créent des sentiments d'appartenance à un milieu. Souvent relié à l'histoire, ou un contexte culturel, le sentiment d'appartenance à un milieu peut être une question délicate, souvent difficile et complexe à décrire. Un manque de discussion approprié sur l'importance des sentiments d'appartenance à un milieu, minimise les chances de négociation entre les gestionnaires de parc, la communauté et les chercheurs en loisir.
