Transitions in identity, belonging, and citizenship and the possibilities of inclusion for women leaving prison: implications for therapeutic recreation

ABSTRACT

Exclusion is a major social issue in Canada. Women who have spent time in prison are particularly vulnerable to exclusionary practices. In this paper, we present findings from a study that examined how women who have returned to the community after incarceration experienced inclusion through their involvement in a community art project. By sharing the insights and experiences of women who participated in the research, we discuss how women’s inclusion was tied to conceptualizations of identity, belonging, and citizenship. We draw on these findings to suggest shifts in therapeutic recreation practice that can enhance inclusion for people most susceptible to being excluded and balance individual transformation with social change. Our hope is that these shifts will more closely align therapeutic recreation with the advancement of inclusive citizenship and social justice.

RÉSUMÉ

L’exclusion est un enjeu important au Canada et les femmes qui ont déjà été emprisonnées sont particulièrement vulnérables aux pratiques d’exclusion. Dans cet article, nous présentons les résultats d’une recherche qui se penche sur le retour dans la communauté de femmes à la suite d’une incarcération et qui ont réussi à s’intégrer grâce à leur participation à un projet artistique communautaire. En partageant les impressions et les expériences des femmes qui ont participé à cette recherche, nous expliquerons comment l’inclusion des femmes est liée aux conceptualisations de l’identité, à l’appartenance et à la citoyenneté. Nous mettons en lumière ces résultats afin de proposer des changements dans les pratiques de loisir thérapeutique qui faciliteraient l’inclusion des personnes les plus susceptibles d’être exclues et arrimerait la transformation individuelle au changement social. Nous espérons que ces changements uniront le loisir thérapeutique aux progrès de la citoyenneté inclusive et de la justice sociale.
