Justice as inclusion: a critical conversation about inclusion and belonging

ABSTRACT

Using Kovach’s conversational method and with our epistemological assumptions (knowing through embodiment, lived experience and scholarship) three leisure scholars used conversation and storytelling as method to explore current understandings of inclusion and belonging that perpetuate the violence of colonialism and the heteropatriarchy. For example, inclusion as it is often enacted is a token gesture of an organization but without making any of the structural changes necessary to ensure true belonging. Much like current rhetoric around decolonization, inclusion can become a metaphor that ultimately maintains the notion of settler futurity. Reframing inclusion to ‘justice as inclusion’ insists that practitioners and scholars, for example, de-program essentialist and capitalist notions of what we imagine Indigeneity to be, name systems of oppression and privilege, and centre Indigenous notions of relationality, including emphasizing the experience of connecting over what it means to be human, and establishing and re-establishing a connection to the non-human world.

En utilisant la méthode conversationnelle de Kovach et en s’appuyant sur nos hypothèses épistémologiques (la connaissance par l’incarnation, l’expérience vécue et la recherche), trois spécialistes des loisirs ont utilisé la conversation et le récit comme méthode pour explorer la manière dont l’inclusion et l’appartenance, telles qu’elles sont actuellement formulées, renforcent le colonialisme de peuplement violent et l’hétéropatriarcat. Par exemple, l’inclusion peut être un geste symbolique de la part d’une organisation, mais sans procéder aux changements structurels nécessaires pour garantir une véritable appartenance. À l’instar de la rhétorique actuelle sur la décolonisation, l’inclusion peut devenir une métaphore qui, en fin de compte, maintient la notion de futurité des colons. La redéfinition de l’inclusion en « justice en tant qu’inclusion » exige que les praticiens et les universitaires, par exemple, déprogramment les notions essentialistes et capitalistes de ce que nous imaginons être l’indigénéité, nomment les systèmes d’oppression et de privilège et centrent les notions autochtones de relationnalité, notamment en mettant l’accent sur l’expérience des échanges sur ce que cela signifie qu’être humain, et en établissant et en rétablissant un rapport avec le monde non humain.
