High frequency immittance findings: Newborn versus six-week-old infants

Abstract

This study aimed to compare the high frequency (1 kHz) tympanometry (HFT) and acoustic reflex (AR) measures obtained from infants at birth and at 6–7 weeks of age. HFT results and AR thresholds using a 2-kHz tone and broadband noise activators were obtained from 42 healthy full-term neonates (15 boys and 27 girls) at both test sessions, separated by six weeks. The results showed that the mean values of HFT test parameters and AR thresholds obtained at 6–7 weeks were generally greater than those obtained at birth. In particular, the differences in mean values of uncompensated admittance at 200 daPa, uncompensated peak admittance, uncompensated peak susceptance, peak-compensated static admittance, and AR thresholds with a 2 kHz tone and broadband noise were found to be statistically significant. The findings from this study suggest the need to have separate sets of normative HFT and AR data for infants at birth and 6–7 weeks.

Sumario

La meta de este estudio fue comparar la timpanometría de alta frecuencia (1 kHz) (HFT) y la medición del reflejo acústico (AR) obtenidos en neonatos y en niños de 6–7 semanas de edad. Los resultados de la HFT y de los umbrales del AR usando un tono de 2-kHz y activadores de ruido de banda ancha se obtuvieron en 42 neonatos sanos de término (15 niños y 27 niñas) en dos sesiones de pruebas separadas entre sí por seis semanas. Los resultados muestran que los valores promedio de los parámetros de prueba de la HFT y de los umbrales del AR obtenidos a las 6–7 semanas fueron generalmente mayores que los obtenidos al nacimiento. En particular, las diferencias en los valores promedio de una admitancia no compensada a 200 daPa, pico de admitancia descompensado, pico descompensado de la susceptancia, pico-compensado de la admitancia estática y los umbrales del AR con un tono de 2 kHz y ruido de banda ancha, fueron estadísticamente significativos. Los hallazgos del estudio sugieren la necesidad de tener bloques separados de datos normativos de la HFT y los AR, para neonatos y para niños de 6–7 semanas de edad.
